what is Surgical dressing? funtion characteristics and types of dressing i:e primary and secondary surgical dressing.

Surgical dressing: 

Definition of surgical dressing:

                                      The sterile covering that is placed over the wound or injuries parts of the body to control bleeding, absorb blood and secretion in order to prevent the infection and ease the pain with the help of tape or bandage is called surgical dressing.  

Main function of surgical dressing:

1.     To provide analytic debridement.            
2.     Absorb the exhausted and promote prompt healing
3.     To ease pain and provide protection for newly formed tissues.
4.     To maintain optimum moist environment for wound without any damage.
5.     To allow post-operative assessment of the wound bed. 
                   

Selection of surgical dressing: the selection of dressing depends upon 

1.      Wound assessment and characteristic of wound bed.
2.      Healing require moisture in the wound bed.

Characteristics of the ideal dressing:

       Capable of maintaining a high humidity at the wound site while removing excess exudate
       Free of particles and toxic wound contaminants
       Non-toxic and non-allergenic
       Capable of protecting the wound from further trauma
       Can be removed without causing trauma to the wound
       Impermeable to bacteria
       Thermally insulating
       Will allow gaseous exchange
       Comfortable and conformable
       Require only infrequent changes
       Cost effective
       Long shelf life

Types of surgical dressing:

             1)primary dressings.

              2)secondary dressings.

Primary dressings versus Secondary dressings

Primary dressings: 

  •  As the name indicate they are applied directly on the top of the  wound.
  • they are in direct contact with the wound their for help in the healing process directly.
  • they are generally use with topical anti-bacterial  ointments or gel that help in keeping the wound clean and expediting the healing process.
  • they should be free from any kind of contamination because this dressing is in direct contact with wound their for my cause infection.
  • they can be cut into different shape for wound packing.
  • they are made of highly sorbent materials in order to absorb the exudate or secretion occur from the wound. 

Examples of primary dressings:

  • plain gauze.
  • impregnated gauze.
  • paraffin gauze dressing etc.

Secondary dressings of fixing/maintenance:

  • As the name  indicate they are applied secondly on the top of primary dressing for support.
  • they  are not in direct contact with wound.
  • for secondary dressing its not necessary to have absorbent.
  • they should be made strong in order to support primary dressing.
  • due to their high adhesiveness character some hypoallergic should be adder in order to avoided skin rashes or irritation.
  • they come in form of bandages, gauze dressings, and some types of tapes.                               

Examples of secondary dressings:

  • bandages such as gauze bandages.
  • compression bandages.
  • cohesive bandages and
  • conformable bandages are the most common types of secondary dressing.

history A 36-year-old woman presents to her general practitioner (GP) complaining of spontaneous bruising mainly on her legs. The bruising has been noticeable over the last 4–6 weeks. She cannot remember any episodes of trauma. In addition, her last two menstrual periods have been abnormally heavy, and she has suffered a major nosebleed. She otherwise feels well and is working full time as a secretary. There is no significant past medical history. She is married with one daughter aged 11 years. There is no family history of a bleeding disorder. She is a non-smoker and drinks a small amount of alcohol socially. Examination On examination, there are multiple areas of purpura on her legs and to a lesser extent on her abdomen and arms. The purpuric lesions vary in color from black–purple to yellow. There are no signs of anemia, but there are two bullae in the mouth and there is spontaneous bleeding from the gums. There are no retinal hemorrhages on funduscopy. Blood pressure is 118/7

Definition: The World Health Organization (WHO) defines lung cancer as tumors arising from the respiratory epithelium (bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli). OR Lung cancer is a type of cancer caused by uncontrolled cell division of the respiratory epithelium (bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli). Normal structure and function of the lungs: Lungs are 2 sponge, pyramid-like organs located in the chest. Each lung is divided into sections called lobes. The right lung has three lobes while the left lung has two lobes. The left lung is smaller than the right one because the heart on the left side takes up more room of the chest. When you inhale air through mouth and nose it enters into lungs through trachea (windpipe). The trachea divides into tubes called bronchi, which enter the lungs and divide into smaller branches called bronchioles. At the end of bronchioles there are small tiny sacs called alveoli.
